Questions worth asking before you book an accessible trip

A vacation should come with good surprises, not a surprise staircase. If you travel with a mobility aid, need a quieter environment, manage dietary requirements, or just want a more comfortable pace, a little specificity up front can make all the difference.

Describe what works for you

Instead of asking only “Is it accessible?”, describe the actual setup you need. A roll-in shower is different from a bathtub with grab bars. A step-free entrance does not tell you whether the path from the parking area is smooth, steep, or long. Share equipment dimensions when relevant and ask for measurements, photos, and a written description.

Ask about the whole journey

  • Getting there: How will boarding work? Are transfers step-free? What assistance must be requested in advance, and from whom?
  • At the property: Is the specific room type you need available on your dates? Ask about doorway widths, bathroom layout, bed height, elevator access, and distance to common areas.
  • Out and about: What are the surfaces, slopes, walking distances, noise levels, and available seating on an activity? Is there an alternate route?
  • Food and rest: Can dietary needs be accommodated? Are there places to pause, and can the itinerary leave room for downtime?

Get the important details in writing

Keep the provider’s answers, the name of the person you spoke with, and any confirmation numbers together with your trip documents. Check cancellation terms and whether a requested feature is actually guaranteed for your booking, rather than merely noted as a preference.

If an answer is vague, ask a narrower follow-up. “Can you send a photo of the shower entrance?” is more useful than “Is the bathroom accessible?” No single checklist fits every traveler, but your questions can be as individual as your trip.

Before you book: Features, assistance policies, and equipment rules can change. Confirm them directly with the hotel, carrier, ship, or tour provider for the exact dates and services you plan to use.
